Padmashri Dr. P.R. Krishnakumar was a renowned figure in the field of Ayurveda, recognized for his contributions to the promotion and modernization of this ancient healing science. As the Chancellor of Avinashilingam University and Chairman of CARe Keralam (Confederation for Ayurvedic Renaissance), he was actively involved in efforts to standardize Ayurvedic medicine. For his contributions to Ayurveda, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2009 and the National Dhanwantari Ayurveda Award in 2016.
Born in 1951, Krishnakumar came from a prestigious family with deep roots in Ayurveda. His father, Arya Vaidyan P. V. Rama Varier, founded the Arya Vaidya Pharmacy (AVP), and under his guidance, Krishnakumar became a passionate advocate of Ayurveda. However, instead of becoming a traditional practitioner, Krishnakumar dedicated himself to promoting Ayurveda education and integrating modern scientific principles into traditional Ayurvedic practices.
His work led to the establishment of the AVT Institute for Advanced Research (AVTAR), where he supported research to back up Ayurvedic traditions with scientific evidence. He was also instrumental in organizing clinical trials and promoting Ayurveda on a global scale, including collaborations with institutions like the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the USA. His efforts have left a lasting impact on Ayurveda, helping it gain global recognition.

Dr. P.R. Krishnakumar was born into a family that had a significant influence on Ayurveda. His father, Arya Vaidyan P. V. Rama Varier, was a pioneer in the globalization of Ayurveda and the founder of Arya Vaidya Pharmacy (AVP). Under the mentorship of his father, Krishnakumar inherited a deep sense of responsibility towards promoting Ayurveda. Despite attending Shornur Ayurveda College, he chose not to practice Ayurveda himself. Instead, he saw a greater mission in spreading awareness about Ayurveda and ensuring its education was scientifically validated.
Krishnakumar’s innovative approach to Ayurveda was evident in his work at his Chikitsalayam in Coimbatore. He integrated various allied knowledge systems, such as Jyotish astrology, into the treatment process, enhancing the holistic nature of Ayurveda. His holistic methods, while sometimes unconventional, gained recognition even among modern medical specialists. This success highlighted his commitment to blending tradition with modernity, ensuring that Ayurveda remained relevant in the modern healthcare system.
One of Krishnakumar’s most significant contributions was his emphasis on scientific validation of Ayurvedic treatments. In 1977, he initiated the first clinical research on Ayurvedic treatment for rheumatoid arthritis in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). This research, although initially met with skepticism, helped Ayurveda gain international recognition. Later, Krishnakumar played a key role in securing funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA, for a clinical trial project. His efforts paved the way for Ayurveda to be taken seriously in the global scientific community.
Krishnakumar also had a deep commitment to education. He founded a unique 7½ year Ayurveda course based on the traditional gurukula system, where students lived with their teachers and were exposed to a holistic learning environment. This course, affiliated with Madras University and later Bharathiar University, produced a generation of well-rounded Ayurveda scholars. Despite facing financial challenges and opposition from authorities, Krishnakumar remained committed to providing value-based education, and many of his students went on to become leaders in Ayurveda.
In addition to his contributions to Ayurveda, Krishnakumar was also involved in promoting Indian cultural values. He established several organizations, such as the Kshetropasana Trust and Bharatamuni Foundation for Asian Culture, to revive and promote traditional Indian culture. His dedication to preserving Indian heritage was evident in his initiatives, which included promoting traditional Indian arts, puppet theater, and sculpture.
Krishnakumar’s contributions to Ayurveda were not limited to education and research. As the head of AVP, he played a pivotal role in transforming the company into one of India’s most respected Ayurvedic institutions. His leadership, vision, and commitment to authenticity ensured that AVP remained a beacon of traditional Ayurveda while embracing modern advancements.
In recognition of his immense contributions, the Government of India awarded Krishnakumar the prestigious Padma Shri in 2009. He considered this honor a recognition of Ayurveda itself. Despite facing criticism and challenges throughout his career, Krishnakumar remained undeterred, continuously working to promote Ayurveda and its principles. His dedication, hard work, and unwavering commitment have left a lasting legacy in the world of Ayurveda.
Krishnakumar’s journey exemplifies the qualities of a true visionary. His life’s work serves as an inspiration to future generations, showing that with perseverance and commitment, it is possible to bring about meaningful change in the world. Even though he passed away, his legacy in Ayurveda continues to inspire and guide practitioners and scholars around the globe.
