From time immemorial, India has been revered as a land blessed with spirituality that transcends religion. Sanathana Dharma teaches that spirituality is the essence of humanity, surpassing life, death, and belief. Through the divine will of Brahmam, the total reality of human existence was revealed to NAVAJYOTHI SREEKARUNAKARA GURU. Guru was born 90 years ago into humble circumstances in Chandiroor, Cherthala. After relentless spiritual pursuit, Guru founded Santhigiri Ashram, located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The Ashram now has branch centers in Cherthala (Janmagriham), Haripad, Kottarakkara, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Kannur, Sultan Bathery, Palakkad, Kallar, Kumily, Cochin, Kottayam, Madurai, Kanyakumari, and Bangalore, carrying forth a spiritual message appropriate for our Yuga, as envisioned by Guru.
Description
Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru was born on the 16th of Chingam, Kolla Varsham 1103 (September 1, 1927), in Chandiroor village, Alappuzha district, Kerala. His father, Sri. Govindan, passed away when Guru was just nine months old, and He was raised by His mother, Smt. Karthyayani. From a young age, Guru experienced profound spiritual visions, the most remarkable being a figure bathed in bright light that appeared within Him. He was mistaken to be mute, as He only spoke when prompted by this figure. This vision faded when He was nine, and Guru began speaking normally, later identifying the figure as Sri Krishna.
As a child, Guru displayed remarkable discipline, maintaining simplicity, cleanliness, and a regular prayer routine. When He was around 10, His mother remarried, and He moved to His stepfather’s house. However, feeling unsettled, He left at the age of 14, seeking a monastic life. He joined the Advaita Ashram at Alwaye, a branch of Sivagiri Mutt founded by Sree Narayana Guru, where He spent 17 years dedicated to various tasks. Although He was respected by many, He also faced challenges from certain groups during His time there.
In 1957, Guru left Sivagiri and moved to a small hut on a nearby hill. His reputation as a healer grew as people flocked to Him for solutions to their ailments. During this period, Guru embarked on spiritual wanderings with Khureshia Fakir, a Sufi saint, gaining deeper spiritual insights. In 1968, following a visionary experience, Guru founded Santhigiri Ashram at Pothencode on land donated by a well-wisher.
On the 4th of Kanni, Kolla Varsham 1149 (September 20, 1973), after years of intense meditation and spiritual practice, Guru attained spiritual completion, with a divine revelation proclaiming, “What I had been waiting for, through Yugas, is realized.” Guru introduced a system of worship based on faith in one Universal God – the Brahman, guiding followers along the Path of Guru (Guru Margam).
Guru left His physical form on 23rd Medam, Kolla Varsham 1174 (May 6, 1999), merging into ‘Adisankalpam’ (the Plane of Primordial Consciousness). It has been revealed that Guru continues to guide the world as ‘Nava Oli’ (New Light and Sound). His spiritual guidance is now channeled through His principal disciple, Her Holiness Sishyapoojitha Amritha Jnana Thapaswini, who leads Santhigiri Ashram as the ‘Gurusthaneeya’ (Guru Apparent). The Ashram remains open to all, offering solace and spiritual wisdom to those who seek it.
