Overview
For centuries, India has been revered as a land where spirituality transcends religious boundaries. Sanathana Dharma teaches that spirituality is the essence of human existence, surpassing life, death, and all belief systems. By the divine will of Brahmam, the complete truth of human life was revealed to Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru. Born 90 years ago in the modest village of Chandiroor, Cherthala, Guru’s steadfast spiritual journey culminated in the founding of Santhigiri Ashram in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Today, the Ashram continues its sacred mission with branches in Cherthala (Janmagriham), Haripad, Kottarakkara, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Kannur, Sultan Bathery, Palakkad, Kallar, Kumily, Cochin, Kottayam, Madurai, Kanyakumari, and Bangalore, faithfully carrying forward Guru’s timeless vision for this era.

Description
Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru was born on September 1, 1927 (16th of Chingam, Kolla Varsham 1103), in the peaceful village of Chandiroor, Kerala. His father, Sri Govindan, passed away when Guru was an infant, leaving His upbringing in the devoted hands of His mother, Smt. Karthyayani. From a very early age, Guru experienced remarkable spiritual visions, including a radiant figure enveloped in light. Initially thought to be mute, He began speaking under the guidance of this divine presence, later identifying it as Sri Krishna. By the age of nine, however, this guiding presence disappeared from His sight.
Guru’s childhood was defined by an extraordinary sense of discipline and devotion, with His days revolving around simplicity, cleanliness, and constant prayer. After His mother remarried, He moved into His stepfather’s home, but feeling a deep spiritual calling, Guru left at the age of 14 to embrace a monastic life. He joined the Advaita Ashram in Alwaye, where He served for 17 years under the spiritual guidance of Sree Narayana Guru at Sivagiri Mutt. Though respected by many, He also encountered opposition.
In 1957, Guru chose to leave Sivagiri and settled in a modest hut on a nearby hilltop, where His healing abilities soon attracted people seeking relief from physical and spiritual ailments. His spiritual journey deepened further through His connection with Khureshia Fakir, a Sufi saint, which expanded His spiritual perspective. In 1968, following a profound vision, Guru established Santhigiri Ashram in Pothencode, on land generously donated by a well-wisher.
After years of deep meditation, Guru attained spiritual fulfillment on September 20, 1973 (4th of Kanni, Kolla Varsham 1149), realizing, “What I had been waiting for, through Yugas, is realized.” With this enlightenment, He introduced a worship system centered on Brahman, the Universal God, guiding His followers on the Guru Margam, the Path of the Guru.
On May 6, 1999 (23rd of Medam, Kolla Varsham 1174), Guru left His physical form, merging into ‘Adisankalpam’ (the Plane of Primordial Consciousness). Even today, Guru is believed to continue guiding the world as ‘Nava Oli’ (New Light and Sound). His teachings are carried forward by His principal disciple, Her Holiness Sishyapoojitha Amritha Jnana Thapaswini, who now leads Santhigiri Ashram as the ‘Gurusthaneeya’ (Guru Apparent), ensuring that the Ashram remains a sanctuary of healing, peace, and spiritual wisdom for all seekers.
