Overview
For centuries, India has been revered as a land where spirituality transcends religious boundaries. Sanathana Dharma teaches that spirituality is the essence of human existence, rising above life, death, and all belief systems. Through the divine will of Brahmam, the complete truth of human life was revealed to Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru. Born 90 years ago in the modest village of Chandiroor, Cherthala, Guru’s steadfast spiritual journey culminated in the establishment of Santhigiri Ashram in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Today, the Ashram continues its sacred mission with branches across Cherthala (Janmagriham), Haripad, Kottarakkara, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Kannur, Sultan Bathery, Palakkad, Kallar, Kumily, Cochin, Kottayam, Madurai, Kanyakumari, and Bangalore, carrying forward Guru’s profound vision for this era.

Description
Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru was born on September 1, 1927 (16th of Chingam, Kolla Varsham 1103), in the village of Chandiroor in Kerala’s Alappuzha district. His father, Sri Govindan, passed away when Guru was just nine months old, leaving Him to be raised by His mother, Smt. Karthyayani. From an early age, Guru had profound spiritual visions, most notably of a radiant figure bathed in light. Thought to be mute, He spoke only when guided by this divine presence, which faded by the age of nine. Later, He identified the figure as Sri Krishna.
As a child, Guru demonstrated extraordinary discipline, living a life of simplicity, cleanliness, and devotion to prayer. At around the age of 10, after His mother remarried, He moved to His stepfather’s home. However, feeling a deep spiritual calling, He left at 14 to embrace a monastic life. Guru joined the Advaita Ashram in Alwaye, associated with the Sivagiri Mutt founded by Sree Narayana Guru, where He served diligently for 17 years. Though many admired Him, He also faced opposition.
In 1957, Guru left Sivagiri and settled in a modest hut on a nearby hill. His healing abilities soon drew people seeking relief from various ailments. During this time, He also embarked on spiritual journeys with Khureshia Fakir, a Sufi saint, further deepening His spiritual understanding. In 1968, following a profound vision, Guru founded Santhigiri Ashram at Pothencode, on land gifted by a well-wisher.
After years of intense meditation, Guru achieved spiritual fulfillment on September 20, 1973 (4th of Kanni, Kolla Varsham 1149), with the realization: “What I had been waiting for, through Yugas, is realized.” He introduced a worship system centered on faith in the Universal God, Brahman, guiding His followers along the Path of Guru (Guru Margam).
On May 6, 1999 (23rd of Medam, Kolla Varsham 1174), Guru left His physical form and merged into ‘Adisankalpam’ (the Plane of Primordial Consciousness). It is believed that He continues to guide the world as ‘Nava Oli’ (New Light and Sound). His spiritual legacy is upheld by His principal disciple, Her Holiness Sishyapoojitha Amritha Jnana Thapaswini, who now leads Santhigiri Ashram as the ‘Gurusthaneeya’ (Guru Apparent). Today, Santhigiri Ashram remains a beacon of healing, peace, and spiritual wisdom for all seekers of enlightenment.
