Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru was born on the 16th of Chingam, Kolla Varsham 1103 (September 1, 1927), in Chandiroor village, Alappuzha district, Kerala. His father, Sri Govindan, passed away when Guru was just nine months old, and He was raised by His mother, Smt. Karthyayani. From a very young age, Guru experienced profound spiritual visions, the most remarkable being a figure bathed in radiant light that appeared within Him. Mistaken to be mute, as He only spoke when prompted by this figure, Guru’s silence was misunderstood. By the age of nine, the vision began to fade, and He started speaking normally, later recognizing the figure as Sri Krishna.

As a child, Guru exhibited remarkable discipline, practicing simplicity, cleanliness, and maintaining a regular routine of prayer. At the age of 10, following His mother’s remarriage, He moved to His stepfather’s house but felt a sense of unrest. By 14, He sought a monastic life, joining the Advaita Ashram at Alwaye, a branch of Sivagiri Mutt founded by the revered Sree Narayana Guru. Over the next 17 years, Guru dedicated Himself to various tasks, gaining respect but also encountering challenges from certain factions.

In 1957, Guru left Sivagiri and settled in a small hut on a nearby hill. His reputation as a healer grew as people sought Him for relief from their ailments. During this period, He embarked on spiritual wanderings with Khureshia Fakir, a Sufi saint, deepening His spiritual insights. In 1968, following a visionary experience, Guru established Santhigiri Ashram at Pothencode on land gifted by a well-wisher.

On the 4th of Kanni, Kolla Varsham 1149 (September 20, 1973), after years of intense meditation and spiritual practice, Guru attained spiritual completion, marked by a divine revelation: “What I had been waiting for, through Yugas, is realized.” Guru introduced a worship system centered on faith in the Universal God – the Brahman – and guided followers along the Guru Margam (Path of Guru).

On 23rd Medam, Kolla Varsham 1174 (May 6, 1999), Guru left His physical form, merging into ‘Adisankalpam’ (the Plane of Primordial Consciousness). It is revealed that Guru continues to guide the world as ‘Nava Oli’ (New Light and Sound), with His spiritual leadership continuing through His principal disciple, Her Holiness Sishyapoojitha Amritha Jnana Thapaswini. Today, Santhigiri Ashram remains open to all, offering solace, wisdom, and spiritual guidance to all who seek it.
