Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru was born on September 1, 1927 (16th of Chingam, Kolla Varsham 1103), in the tranquil village of Chandiroor, Kerala. His father, Sri Govindan, passed away when Guru was just an infant, and his upbringing was left in the hands of his mother, Smt. Karthyayani. From a very young age, Guru’s spiritual path began to unfold through extraordinary visions, most notably of a radiant figure surrounded by light. Although initially believed to be mute, He began speaking under the guidance of this divine presence, which He later identified as Sri Krishna, disappearing from His sight by the age of nine.

Guru’s early life was characterized by a remarkable sense of discipline and devotion. His daily routine was centered around simplicity, cleanliness, and constant prayer. Following His mother’s remarriage, Guru moved into His stepfather’s home but, feeling a strong inner calling, left at the age of 14 to follow a monastic path. He joined the Advaita Ashram in Alwaye, where He worked tirelessly for 17 years under the spiritual lineage of Sree Narayana Guru at Sivagiri Mutt. Although deeply respected by many, He also faced resistance from some quarters.

In 1957, Guru chose to leave Sivagiri and made His home on a nearby hilltop in a humble hut. It wasn’t long before people began flocking to Him, seeking His healing abilities for their physical and spiritual ailments. His spiritual journey also took Him to the company of Khureshia Fakir, a Sufi saint, which broadened and deepened His spiritual perspective. In 1968, Guru had a profound vision that inspired the establishment of Santhigiri Ashram in Pothencode, where land had been gifted to Him by a well-wisher.

Years of deep meditation led Guru to spiritual fulfillment on September 20, 1973 (4th of Kanni, Kolla Varsham 1149), when He realized: “What I had been waiting for, through Yugas, is realized.” With this enlightenment, He established a path of worship centered on Brahman, the Universal God, guiding His followers along the Guru Margam, or Path of the Guru.

On May 6, 1999 (23rd of Medam, Kolla Varsham 1174), Guru left His physical form, merging into ‘Adisankalpam’ (the Plane of Primordial Consciousness). Even today, His followers believe that He continues to guide the world as ‘Nava Oli’ (New Light and Sound). His principal disciple, Her Holiness Sishyapoojitha Amritha Jnana Thapaswini, now leads Santhigiri Ashram as the ‘Gurusthaneeya’ (Guru Apparent), keeping Guru’s teachings alive and ensuring that the Ashram remains a sanctuary of healing, peace, and spiritual wisdom for all seekers.
