Overview
For centuries, India has been revered as a land where spirituality transcends religious boundaries. Sanathana Dharma teaches that spirituality is the core of human existence, surpassing life, death, and all belief systems. Through the divine will of Brahmam, the full truth of human life was revealed to Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru. Born 90 years ago in the modest village of Chandiroor, Cherthala, Guru’s steadfast spiritual journey led to the founding of Santhigiri Ashram in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Today, the Ashram continues its sacred mission with branches in Cherthala (Janmagriham), Haripad, Kottarakkara, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Kannur, Sultan Bathery, Palakkad, Kallar, Kumily, Cochin, Kottayam, Madurai, Kanyakumari, and Bangalore, carrying forward Guru’s profound vision for this age.

Description
Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru was born on September 1, 1927 (16th of Chingam, Kolla Varsham 1103), in the village of Chandiroor, Alappuzha district, Kerala. His father, Sri Govindan, passed away when Guru was only nine months old, leaving Him to be raised by His mother, Smt. Karthyayani. From a young age, Guru had profound spiritual visions, including one of a radiant figure bathed in light. Initially believed to be mute, He spoke only under the guidance of this divine presence, which disappeared by the time He was nine. He later identified this figure as Sri Krishna.
As a child, Guru displayed remarkable discipline, living simply, cleanly, and devoted to prayer. Around the age of 10, after His mother remarried, He moved to His stepfather’s home. Driven by a deep spiritual calling, He left at 14 to pursue a monastic life. Guru joined the Advaita Ashram in Alwaye, affiliated with the Sivagiri Mutt founded by Sree Narayana Guru, where He served diligently for 17 years. Despite receiving widespread admiration, He also faced some opposition.
In 1957, Guru departed from Sivagiri and settled in a humble hut on a nearby hill, where His healing abilities soon attracted those seeking relief from various ailments. During this period, He undertook spiritual journeys with Khureshia Fakir, a Sufi saint, deepening His spiritual understanding. In 1968, following a profound vision, Guru founded Santhigiri Ashram at Pothencode on land donated by a well-wisher.
After years of intense meditation, Guru attained spiritual fulfillment on September 20, 1973 (4th of Kanni, Kolla Varsham 1149), with the realization: “What I had been waiting for, through Yugas, is realized.” He introduced a worship system centered on faith in the Universal God, Brahman, guiding His followers along the Path of Guru (Guru Margam).
On May 6, 1999 (23rd of Medam, Kolla Varsham 1174), Guru left His physical form and merged into ‘Adisankalpam’ (the Plane of Primordial Consciousness). It is believed that He continues to guide the world as ‘Nava Oli’ (New Light and Sound). His spiritual legacy is carried forward by His principal disciple, Her Holiness Sishyapoojitha Amritha Jnana Thapaswini, who now leads Santhigiri Ashram as the ‘Gurusthaneeya’ (Guru Apparent). Today, Santhigiri Ashram stands as a beacon of healing, peace, and spiritual wisdom for all those seeking enlightenment.
