Overview

For centuries, India has been revered as a land where spirituality transcends religious boundaries. Sanathana Dharma teaches that spirituality is the core of human existence, surpassing life, death, and all belief systems. Through the divine will of Brahmam, the full truth of human life was revealed to Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru. Born 90 years ago in the humble village of Chandiroor, Cherthala, Guru’s unwavering spiritual journey led to the founding of Santhigiri Ashram in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Today, the Ashram carries forward its sacred mission with branches in Cherthala (Janmagriham), Haripad, Kottarakkara, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Kannur, Sultan Bathery, Palakkad, Kallar, Kumily, Cochin, Kottayam, Madurai, Kanyakumari, and Bangalore, continuing to uphold Guru’s profound vision for this era.

Description

Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru was born on September 1, 1927 (16th of Chingam, Kolla Varsham 1103), in Chandiroor, a village in Kerala’s Alappuzha district. His father, Sri Govindan, passed away when Guru was just nine months old, leaving Him to be raised by His mother, Smt. Karthyayani. From an early age, Guru experienced profound spiritual visions, the most notable being a radiant figure bathed in light. Believed to be mute, He only spoke when guided by this divine presence, which faded by the age of nine. He later identified the figure as Sri Krishna.

As a child, Guru exemplified remarkable discipline, embracing a life of simplicity, cleanliness, and prayer. At around 10 years old, after His mother remarried, He moved to His stepfather’s home. However, driven by an inner spiritual calling, He left at 14 to pursue a monastic life. Guru joined the Advaita Ashram in Alwaye, associated with the Sivagiri Mutt founded by Sree Narayana Guru, where He diligently served for 17 years. Though admired by many, He also faced opposition.

In 1957, Guru left Sivagiri and settled in a small hut on a nearby hill, where His healing abilities soon drew people seeking relief from various ailments. During this period, He also embarked on spiritual journeys with Khureshia Fakir, a Sufi saint, which deepened His spiritual insights. In 1968, after a profound vision, Guru founded Santhigiri Ashram at Pothencode, on land donated by a well-wisher.

After years of intense meditation, Guru attained spiritual fulfillment on September 20, 1973 (4th of Kanni, Kolla Varsham 1149), with the realization: “What I had been waiting for, through Yugas, is realized.” He introduced a worship system centered on faith in the Universal God, the Brahman, guiding His followers on the Path of Guru (Guru Margam).

On May 6, 1999 (23rd of Medam, Kolla Varsham 1174), Guru left His physical form and merged into ‘Adisankalpam’ (the Plane of Primordial Consciousness). It is believed that He continues to guide the world as ‘Nava Oli’ (New Light and Sound). His spiritual legacy is carried forward by His principal disciple, Her Holiness Sishyapoojitha Amritha Jnana Thapaswini, who now leads Santhigiri Ashram as the ‘Gurusthaneeya’ (Guru Apparent). Today, Santhigiri Ashram continues to serve as a beacon of healing, peace, and spiritual wisdom for all seekers of enlightenment.
