Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru was born on the 16th of Chingam, Kolla Varsham 1103 (September 1, 1927), in Chandiroor, a village in Alappuzha district, Kerala. His father, Sri Govindan, passed away when Guru was just nine months old, leaving Him to be raised by His mother, Smt. Karthyayani. From a young age, Guru experienced profound spiritual visions, the most striking of which was a radiant figure bathed in light. Mistaken for mute, He spoke only when guided by this divine vision, which faded by the age of nine. Later, He recognized this figure as Sri Krishna.

As a child, Guru demonstrated remarkable discipline, embracing simplicity, cleanliness, and a life dedicated to prayer. At around 10, after His mother’s remarriage, He moved to His stepfather’s home. Driven by a deep spiritual calling, He left at the age of 14 to pursue a monastic life. Guru joined the Advaita Ashram in Alwaye, affiliated with the Sivagiri Mutt founded by Sree Narayana Guru, and spent 17 years in various roles. Despite gaining admiration from many, He faced opposition from some.

In 1957, Guru left Sivagiri and settled in a small hut on a nearby hill, where His healing abilities began to attract people seeking relief from various ailments. During this period, He also undertook spiritual journeys with Khureshia Fakir, a Sufi saint, which enriched His spiritual understanding. In 1968, following a powerful vision, Guru established Santhigiri Ashram at Pothencode on land donated by a well-wisher.

After years of profound meditation and spiritual practice, Guru achieved spiritual fulfillment on the 4th of Kanni, Kolla Varsham 1149 (September 20, 1973), with the realization: “What I had been waiting for, through Yugas, is realized.” He introduced a worship system centered on faith in the Universal God, the Brahman, guiding His followers on the Path of Guru (Guru Margam).

On the 23rd of Medam, Kolla Varsham 1174 (May 6, 1999), Guru left His physical form, merging into ‘Adisankalpam’ (the Plane of Primordial Consciousness). It is believed that He continues to guide the world as ‘Nava Oli’ (New Light and Sound). His spiritual legacy is upheld by His principal disciple, Her Holiness Sishyapoojitha Amritha Jnana Thapaswini, who now leads Santhigiri Ashram as the ‘Gurusthaneeya’ (Guru Apparent). Today, Santhigiri Ashram remains a beacon of healing, peace, and spiritual wisdom for all who seek enlightenment.
