Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru was born on the 16th of Chingam, Kolla Varsham 1103 (September 1, 1927), in Chandiroor, Alappuzha district, Kerala. His father, Sri Govindan, passed away when Guru was just nine months old, leaving Him to be raised by His mother, Smt. Karthyayani. From an early age, Guru experienced profound spiritual visions, including that of a radiant figure within Him. Misunderstood as mute due to His silence, He spoke only when prompted by this divine presence. At the age of nine, the vision faded, and He began to speak normally, later identifying the figure as Sri Krishna.

As a child, Guru lived with extraordinary discipline, embracing simplicity, cleanliness, and prayer. At 10, after His mother remarried, He moved to His stepfather’s home but felt a deep inner restlessness. By the age of 14, He set out on a quest for monastic life, joining the Advaita Ashram at Alwaye, a branch of Sivagiri Mutt founded by Sree Narayana Guru. For the next 17 years, He dedicated Himself to service, gaining respect but also encountering resistance from certain groups.

In 1957, Guru left Sivagiri and settled in a small hut on a nearby hill, where His reputation as a healer began to grow. People sought Him for relief from their ailments, and during this time, He embarked on spiritual journeys with Khureshia Fakir, a Sufi saint, gaining deeper spiritual insights. In 1968, following a visionary experience, He established Santhigiri Ashram at Pothencode, on land gifted by a well-wisher.

On the 4th of Kanni, Kolla Varsham 1149 (September 20, 1973), after years of deep spiritual practice, Guru attained fulfillment, marked by the divine revelation: “What I had been waiting for, through Yugas, is realized.” He introduced a worship system rooted in faith in the Universal God – Brahman – guiding His followers on the Guru Margam (Path of the Guru).

On the 23rd of Medam, Kolla Varsham 1174 (May 6, 1999), Guru left His physical form, merging into ‘Adisankalpam’ (the Plane of Primordial Consciousness). Today, Guru continues to guide the world as ‘Nava Oli’ (New Light and Sound), with His spiritual mission carried forward by His principal disciple, Her Holiness Sishyapoojitha Amritha Jnana Thapaswini. Santhigiri Ashram remains a beacon of spiritual solace, wisdom, and guidance for all who seek it.
