Overview

Founder of Arogya Mandir

Dr. Vithal Das Modi, born on April 25, 1912, in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, was the visionary behind Arogya Mandir, a Nature-Cure Hospital founded in 1940. In 1962, he also established the Gorakhpur School of Natural Therapeutics, where 70 to 100 students are trained annually in naturopathy. The hospital, located in a natural setting, has 140 beds.

Dr. Modi studied at Banaras Hindu University and actively participated in the Indian Freedom Struggle. He became a well-known naturopath and was admired for his multifaceted personality, which included being a writer, philanthropist, and teacher. He was especially devoted to teaching ‘Vipassana’ meditation, as taught by Gautama Buddha, throughout his life.

He served as the vice-president of the All-India Nature-Cure Council for three terms and was an advisor to the Health Minister of India for naturopathy research. Dr. Modi also played a significant role in shaping the four-year naturopathy syllabus in Uttar Pradesh. He worked as an Emeritus Lecturer at Gandhi Nature-Cure College in Hyderabad and was a lifelong consultant for Dr. Modi’s Karjat Health Resort, also known as the second Arogya Mandir.

Dr. Modi edited and published the monthly health magazine ‘Arogya’ since 1947, with a circulation of about 12,000. He also edited ‘Jeevan Sakha’ and ‘Jeevan Sahitya,’ along with authoring several books. His well-known book *Rogon ki Saral Chikitsa* (Simple Treatments for Diseases) has been published in 14 editions, with an English version titled *Nature-Cure for Common Diseases*. Other notable works include Dugdha-Kalp (Milk Treatment), Jeene Ki Kala (The Art of Living), Yaaden (Memoirs), and Sukhmaya Burhapa (Comfortable Old Age).

Dr. Modi passed away on March 23, 2000.

Description

The Importance of Nature Cure

In today’s world, city pollution has reached dangerous levels, and modern lifestyles combined with competitive work environments often lead to stress, tension, and high blood pressure. Naturopathy is a healing system that helps the body eliminate harmful toxins using natural methods like yoga, fitness activities, and proper lifestyle changes. These practices promote physical, mental, and spiritual balance, while strengthening the body’s immunity against diseases.

While modern medicine, especially allopathic drugs, can treat many diseases quickly, they often come with side effects that can weaken the body’s natural defense system. This can make a person more vulnerable to future illnesses.

Arogya Mandir Nature Cure Hospital is located on a vast 4-acre land, surrounded by nature, and offers a pollution-free environment. It is 5 kilometers from Gorakhpur Railway Station in Uttar Pradesh, India. Patients at Arogya Mandir benefit from fresh air, sunshine, and a peaceful atmosphere. The hospital is close to sacred sites such as the Yogi Baba Goraksh Nath Temple, the Samadhi of Saint Kabir Das in Maghar (25 km away), and Lord Buddha’s Nirvana site in Kushinagar (51 km away).

The hospital is well-equipped with modern facilities and offers treatments based on the five elements of nature: Earth, Water, Sun, Air, and Sky. The foundation of its treatment approach is based on the idea that the body can heal itself without the use of drugs, through naturopathy and yoga.
