Overview
For centuries, India has been revered as a land where spirituality transcends religious boundaries. Sanathana Dharma teaches that spirituality is the essence of human existence, rising above life, death, and belief systems. Through the divine will of Brahmam, the profound truths of human life were revealed to Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru. Born 90 years ago in the humble village of Chandiroor, Cherthala, Guru’s unwavering spiritual journey led to the founding of Santhigiri Ashram in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Today, the Ashram continues its sacred mission, with branches in Cherthala (Janmagriham), Haripad, Kottarakkara, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Kannur, Sultan Bathery, Palakkad, Kallar, Kumily, Cochin, Kottayam, Madurai, Kanyakumari, and Bangalore, faithfully upholding Guru’s enduring vision with dedication and grace.

Description
Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru was born on September 1, 1927 (16th of Chingam, Kolla Varsham 1103), in the serene village of Chandiroor, Kerala. After His father, Sri Govindan, passed away when He was just an infant, His mother, Smt. Karthyayani, lovingly raised Him. From an early age, Guru experienced extraordinary spiritual visions, including a radiant figure bathed in light. Initially believed to be mute, He began speaking under the guidance of this divine presence, which He later recognized as Sri Krishna. By the age of nine, this guiding presence disappeared from His sight.
Guru’s childhood was characterized by deep discipline, simplicity, and devotion, with His life revolving around cleanliness and constant prayer. After His mother remarried, He moved to His stepfather’s home, but driven by a profound spiritual calling, He left at the age of 14 to pursue a monastic life. He joined the Advaita Ashram in Alwaye, serving for 17 years under the spiritual lineage of Sree Narayana Guru at Sivagiri Mutt. While Guru gained great respect, He also faced resistance from certain quarters.
In 1957, Guru decided to part ways with Sivagiri and settled in a modest hut on a nearby hilltop. His healing abilities soon attracted people seeking relief from physical and spiritual ailments. His spiritual journey deepened through his association with Khureshia Fakir, a Sufi saint. In 1968, following a profound vision, Guru founded Santhigiri Ashram in Pothencode, on land generously donated by a well-wisher.
After years of intense meditation, Guru attained spiritual fulfillment on September 20, 1973 (4th of Kanni, Kolla Varsham 1149), realizing, “What I had been waiting for, through Yugas, is realized.” With this enlightenment, He established a worship system centered on Brahman, the Universal God, guiding His followers along the Guru Margam, or Path of the Guru.
On May 6, 1999 (23rd of Medam, Kolla Varsham 1174), Guru left His physical form and merged into ‘Adisankalpam’ (the Plane of Primordial Consciousness). Today, He is believed to guide the world as ‘Nava Oli’ (New Light and Sound). His teachings continue under the leadership of His principal disciple, Her Holiness Sishyapoojitha Amritha Jnana Thapaswini, who now leads Santhigiri Ashram as the ‘Gurusthaneeya’ (Guru Apparent), ensuring the Ashram remains a sanctuary of healing, peace, and spiritual wisdom for all who seek enlightenment.
