Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru was born on the 16th of Chingam, Kolla Varsham 1103 (September 1, 1927), in Chandiroor, a village in Alappuzha district, Kerala. His father, Sri Govindan, passed away when Guru was just nine months old, leaving Him to be raised by His mother, Smt. Karthyayani. From an early age, Guru experienced profound spiritual visions, the most remarkable being a radiant figure bathed in light. Mistaken for mute, He spoke only when guided by this divine vision, which disappeared by the time He was nine. Later in life, He identified this figure as Sri Krishna.

As a child, Guru exhibited extraordinary discipline, embracing simplicity, cleanliness, and a life devoted to prayer. At the age of 10, after His mother remarried, He moved to His stepfather’s home. However, feeling a deep spiritual calling, He left at the age of 14 to pursue a monastic life. Guru joined the Advaita Ashram in Alwaye, affiliated with the Sivagiri Mutt founded by Sree Narayana Guru, where He spent 17 years fulfilling various responsibilities. Despite being admired by many, He also faced opposition from some.

In 1957, Guru left Sivagiri and settled in a small hut on a nearby hill. His healing abilities soon gained attention, attracting people seeking relief from ailments. During this period, He also embarked on spiritual journeys with Khureshia Fakir, a Sufi saint, which deepened His spiritual understanding. In 1968, following a powerful vision, Guru established Santhigiri Ashram at Pothencode on land generously donated by a well-wisher.

After years of deep meditation and spiritual practice, Guru attained spiritual fulfillment on the 4th of Kanni, Kolla Varsham 1149 (September 20, 1973), with the divine realization: “What I had been waiting for, through Yugas, is realized.” He introduced a worship system focused on faith in the Universal God, the Brahman, guiding His followers along the Path of Guru (Guru Margam).

On the 23rd of Medam, Kolla Varsham 1174 (May 6, 1999), Guru left His physical form, merging into ‘Adisankalpam’ (the Plane of Primordial Consciousness). He is believed to continue guiding the world as ‘Nava Oli’ (New Light and Sound). His spiritual legacy is carried forward by His principal disciple, Her Holiness Sishyapoojitha Amritha Jnana Thapaswini, who now leads Santhigiri Ashram as the ‘Gurusthaneeya’ (Guru Apparent). Today, Santhigiri Ashram stands as a beacon of healing, peace, and spiritual wisdom for seekers of enlightenment.
