Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru was born on the 16th of Chingam, Kolla Varsham 1103 (September 1, 1927), in the village of Chandiroor, Alappuzha district, Kerala. His father, Sri Govindan, passed away when Guru was only nine months old, leaving Him in the care of His mother, Smt. Karthyayani. From a very young age, Guru experienced profound spiritual visions, the most remarkable being a radiant figure bathed in light. Mistaken for mute, He only spoke when guided by this divine vision, which disappeared by the time He was nine. Later, He recognized this figure as Sri Krishna.

As a child, Guru demonstrated extraordinary discipline, living a life marked by simplicity, cleanliness, and strict adherence to prayer. Around the age of 10, after His mother’s remarriage, He moved to His stepfather’s home. However, driven by a deep spiritual calling, He left at 14 to pursue a monastic life. Guru joined the Advaita Ashram in Alwaye, affiliated with the Sivagiri Mutt founded by Sree Narayana Guru, and spent 17 years serving in various roles. Though admired by many, He also faced opposition from some.

In 1957, Guru left Sivagiri and settled in a small hut on a nearby hill. His healing abilities soon gained attention, drawing people seeking relief from various ailments. During this period, He also embarked on spiritual journeys with Khureshia Fakir, a Sufi saint, which further deepened His spiritual insights. In 1968, following a powerful vision, He established Santhigiri Ashram at Pothencode on land donated by a well-wisher.

After years of deep meditation and spiritual practice, Guru attained spiritual fulfillment on the 4th of Kanni, Kolla Varsham 1149 (September 20, 1973), with the divine realization: “What I had been waiting for, through Yugas, is realized.” He introduced a worship system centered on faith in the Universal God, the Brahman, and guided followers along the Path of Guru (Guru Margam).

On the 23rd of Medam, Kolla Varsham 1174 (May 6, 1999), Guru left His physical body, merging into ‘Adisankalpam’ (the Plane of Primordial Consciousness). It is believed that He continues to guide the world as ‘Nava Oli’ (New Light and Sound). His spiritual legacy is carried forward by His principal disciple, Her Holiness Sishyapoojitha Amritha Jnana Thapaswini, who now leads Santhigiri Ashram as the ‘Gurusthaneeya’ (Guru Apparent). Today, Santhigiri Ashram stands as a beacon of healing, peace, and spiritual wisdom for all seekers of enlightenment.
