Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru was born on the 16th of Chingam, Kolla Varsham 1103 (September 1, 1927), in Chandiroor, Alappuzha district, Kerala. His father, Sri Govindan, passed away when He was just nine months old, leaving Him in the care of His mother, Smt. Karthyayani. From an early age, Guru experienced profound spiritual visions, the most striking being a radiant figure bathed in light that appeared within Him. Mistaken for being mute, He spoke only when guided by this vision, which disappeared by the time He was nine. Later, He recognized the figure as Sri Krishna.

As a child, Guru exhibited extraordinary discipline, embracing simplicity, cleanliness, and a strict prayer routine. Around the age of 10, after His mother remarried, He moved to His stepfather’s home. However, feeling a deep spiritual calling, He left at 14 to pursue a monastic life. He joined the Advaita Ashram at Alwaye, a branch of the Sivagiri Mutt founded by Sree Narayana Guru, where He dedicated 17 years to various responsibilities. Despite gaining admiration, He also faced opposition from some quarters.

In 1957, Guru left Sivagiri and moved to a small hut on a nearby hill. His reputation as a healer began to spread, attracting those seeking relief from ailments. During this period, Guru also embarked on spiritual journeys with Khureshia Fakir, a Sufi saint, which further deepened His spiritual understanding. In 1968, after a powerful vision, He founded Santhigiri Ashram at Pothencode on land donated by a well-wisher.

After years of intense meditation and spiritual practice, Guru attained spiritual fulfillment on the 4th of Kanni, Kolla Varsham 1149 (September 20, 1973), with the divine realization: “What I had been waiting for, through Yugas, is realized.” He introduced a system of worship centered on faith in the Universal God – the Brahman – guiding devotees on the Path of Guru (Guru Margam).

Guru left His physical form on the 23rd of Medam, Kolla Varsham 1174 (May 6, 1999), merging into ‘Adisankalpam’ (the Plane of Primordial Consciousness). It is said that He continues to guide the world as ‘Nava Oli’ (New Light and Sound). His spiritual legacy is carried forward by His principal disciple, Her Holiness Sishyapoojitha Amritha Jnana Thapaswini, who now leads Santhigiri Ashram as the ‘Gurusthaneeya’ (Guru Apparent). The Ashram remains a haven for all, offering solace, healing, and spiritual wisdom to those seeking peace and enlightenment.
