Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru was born on the 16th of Chingam, Kolla Varsham 1103 (September 1, 1927), in the village of Chandiroor, Alappuzha district, Kerala. His father, Sri Govindan, passed away when Guru was just nine months old, leaving Him to be raised by His mother, Smt. Karthyayani. From a very young age, Guru experienced profound spiritual visions, including a radiant figure bathed in light that appeared within Him. Initially perceived as mute, He spoke only when guided by this figure, which gradually faded by the age of nine. He later identified the figure as Sri Krishna.

As a child, Guru demonstrated remarkable discipline, embracing simplicity, cleanliness, and a rigorous prayer routine. At around age 10, following His mother’s remarriage, He moved to His stepfather’s home. Feeling a deep spiritual unrest, He left home at age 14 in search of a monastic life. He joined the Advaita Ashram at Alwaye, a branch of the Sivagiri Mutt founded by Sree Narayana Guru, dedicating 17 years to various duties. Despite gaining respect, He faced opposition from some quarters.

In 1957, Guru left Sivagiri and settled in a small hut on a nearby hill, where His reputation as a healer grew. People sought His help for various ailments, and during this period, He undertook spiritual journeys with Khureshia Fakir, a Sufi saint, deepening His insights. In 1968, following a profound visionary experience, Guru established Santhigiri Ashram at Pothencode on land donated by a well-wisher.

After years of intense meditation and spiritual practice, Guru attained spiritual fulfillment on the 4th of Kanni, Kolla Varsham 1149 (September 20, 1973), with a divine revelation: “What I had been waiting for, through Yugas, is realized.” He introduced a worship system centered on faith in the Universal God – the Brahman – and guided devotees along the Guru Margam (Path of the Guru).

Guru left His physical form on the 23rd of Medam, Kolla Varsham 1174 (May 6, 1999), merging into ‘Adisankalpam’ (the Plane of Primordial Consciousness). He continues to guide the world as ‘Nava Oli’ (New Light and Sound). His teachings and spiritual legacy are now carried forward by His principal disciple, Her Holiness Sishyapoojitha Amritha Jnana Thapaswini, who leads Santhigiri Ashram as the ‘Gurusthaneeya’ (Guru Apparent). The Ashram remains a sanctuary, offering solace, healing, and spiritual wisdom to all who seek it.
