Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru was born on the 16th of Chingam, Kolla Varsham 1103 (September 1, 1927), in the village of Chandiroor, Alappuzha district, Kerala. His father, Sri Govindan, passed away when Guru was just nine months old, leaving Him to be raised by His mother, Smt. Karthyayani. From a very young age, Guru experienced profound spiritual visions, most notably a radiant figure bathed in bright light that appeared within Him. Initially misunderstood as mute, He spoke only when guided by this figure, which faded by the age of nine. He later recognized the figure as Sri Krishna.

As a child, Guru exhibited exceptional discipline, embracing simplicity, cleanliness, and a rigorous prayer routine. At around age 10, after His mother remarried, He moved to His stepfather’s home. Feeling a deep spiritual unrest, Guru left home at the age of 14 in search of a monastic life. He joined the Advaita Ashram at Alwaye, a branch of the Sivagiri Mutt founded by Sree Narayana Guru, where He dedicated 17 years to various duties. Despite earning respect and admiration, He faced opposition from some quarters during His time there.

In 1957, Guru departed from Sivagiri and settled in a small hut on a nearby hill, where His reputation as a healer began to grow. People sought His help for various ailments, and during this period, He undertook spiritual journeys with Khureshia Fakir, a Sufi saint, which deepened His insights. In 1968, following a powerful visionary experience, Guru established Santhigiri Ashram at Pothencode on land donated by a well-wisher.

After years of intense meditation and spiritual practice, Guru attained spiritual fulfillment on the 4th of Kanni, Kolla Varsham 1149 (September 20, 1973), with a divine revelation: “What I had been waiting for, through Yugas, is realized.” He introduced a worship system centered on faith in the Universal God – the Brahman – guiding devotees along the Path of Guru (Guru Margam).

Guru left His physical form on the 23rd of Medam, Kolla Varsham 1174 (May 6, 1999), merging into ‘Adisankalpam’ (the Plane of Primordial Consciousness). He continues to guide the world as ‘Nava Oli’ (New Light and Sound). His teachings and spiritual legacy are carried forward by His principal disciple, Her Holiness Sishyapoojitha Amritha Jnana Thapaswini, who now leads Santhigiri Ashram as the ‘Gurusthaneeya’ (Guru Apparent). The Ashram remains a sanctuary for all, offering solace, healing, and spiritual wisdom to those who seek it.
