Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru was born on the 16th of Chingam, Kolla Varsham 1103 (September 1, 1927), in the village of Chandiroor, Alappuzha district, Kerala. His father, Sri Govindan, passed away when Guru was just nine months old, leaving Him to be raised by His mother, Smt. Karthyayani. From a very young age, Guru experienced profound spiritual visions, the most remarkable being a radiant figure bathed in bright light that appeared within Him. Mistaken for being mute, He spoke only when guided by this figure. This vision faded at the age of nine, and He began speaking normally, later recognizing the figure as Sri Krishna.

As a child, Guru demonstrated extraordinary discipline, maintaining simplicity, cleanliness, and a strict prayer routine. Around the age of 10, after His mother remarried, He moved to His stepfather’s house. However, feeling a deep spiritual unrest, Guru left home at the age of 14 in search of a monastic life. He joined the Advaita Ashram at Alwaye, a branch of Sivagiri Mutt founded by Sree Narayana Guru, where He spent 17 years dedicated to various duties. Despite earning admiration from many, He faced challenges from certain groups during His time there.

In 1957, Guru left Sivagiri and moved to a small hut on a nearby hill. His reputation as a healer spread, attracting people seeking relief from ailments. During this period, Guru undertook spiritual journeys with Khureshia Fakir, a Sufi saint, further deepening His spiritual insights. In 1968, following a powerful visionary experience, Guru established Santhigiri Ashram at Pothencode on land donated by a well-wisher.

After years of intense meditation and spiritual practice, Guru attained spiritual fulfillment on the 4th of Kanni, Kolla Varsham 1149 (September 20, 1973), with a divine revelation: “What I had been waiting for, through Yugas, is realized.” He introduced a unique system of worship centered on faith in the Universal God – the Brahman – guiding devotees on the Path of Guru (Guru Margam).

Guru left His physical form on the 23rd of Medam, Kolla Varsham 1174 (May 6, 1999), merging into ‘Adisankalpam’ (the Plane of Primordial Consciousness). It is revealed that Guru continues to guide the world as ‘Nava Oli’ (New Light and Sound). His teachings and spiritual legacy now flow through His principal disciple, Her Holiness Sishyapoojitha Amritha Jnana Thapaswini, who leads Santhigiri Ashram as the ‘Gurusthaneeya’ (Guru Apparent). The Ashram remains open to all, offering solace, healing, and spiritual wisdom to those who seek it.
